What is it?
An oil extracted from borage, a common garden herb. It provides gamma linolenic acid (GLA). This is one of the essential fatty acids, essential as we can only obtain them from diet or supplements. GLA produces prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that can help regulate the immune system and prevent inflammation.
What does it do?
Reduces inflammation: A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine noted that starflower oil can help regulate the body’s immune system and improve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Eases eczema and psoriasis: Studies have shown relief of symptoms from supplementation and topical application of the oil.
Reduces breast pain in pre-menstrual syndrome PMS): Regular supplementation can reduce this common symptom.
When do I need it?
If you suffer PMS or are following a low-fat diet as the latter may mean you are lacking in essential fatty acids.
How do I get it?
Take: you’ll want to take a supplement as it’s very difficult to get enough GLA from the borage plant itself (used in salads and soups). Supplements are often combined with Evening Primrose Oil to enhance the benefits when used for PMS.
Be careful…
Avoid when pregnant or if taking blood thinners, such as aspirin or warfarin.
