Travel | Porthminster View, St Ives
There’s nothing like a sea view to cheer the soul – and the huge bay windows of the Porthminster View offer a perfect vista: from your kitchen bar stool you can sip a G&T, watch the clouds cast shadows over the turquoise waters and golden sands below, and feel the stress slip away.

Don’t think a country stay with the family has to mean a chintzy cottage – my brood loved this chic, spacious apartment, which includes use of the swanky Harbour Spa and gym (stives-harbour-hotel.co.uk) and all home comforts (wi-fi, iPlayer etc) to keep the preteens happy.
We hit St Ives, the art hub of Cornwall, for a week of family time – and there was plenty for everyone, from mooching round the art galleries, glossy shops and coastal walks (me) to the amusement arcade and trying out yet another ice cream flavour (the kids and, erm, their dad). But the highlight was our surf lesson at St Ives Surf School (porthmeor-beach.co.uk). The sun was shining, and, thanks to our experienced instructor, we were soon standing on our boards. Ready-made family memories to share over a hot chocolate at the cool beach cafe – with cream and marshmallows, of course.
A week at Porthminster View (sleeps four) costs from £205pp (£820 total). A two-hour surf lesson with St Ives Surf School costs from £30pp for a family of four. See aspectsholidays.co.uk/cottages/in/st-ives.
