Healthy spicy recipes: Booze-free Christmas cup

Combining the citrusy goodness of fresh oranges and limes with the spicy aromas of cinnamon sticks, star anise, nutmeg and cloves, this recipe by foodie star Mira Manek truly is Christmas in a cup. It’s the kind of drink you want to be cuddling up with – or serving – at the end of a dinner party.

Serves 4 small cups

50ml water
1 tbsp grated ginger
5 small cinnamon sticks/pieces
¼ tsp cinnamon powder
3 cloves
2 star anise
A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
1 large orange
1 lime or lemon
2 tbsp honey
¼ tsp turmeric powder
A handful of cranberries

1 Start by placing the water in a pan and grate the ginger into the pan. Let this boil on a low heat for a minimum of 5 mins before straining into another pan. If you like to chew the ginger pieces, then leave the ginger in the same pan.

2 Now add the cinnamon sticks, cinnamon powder, cloves,  star anise and nutmeg into the ginger water and squeeze the juice from the lime and orange. I like to squeeze the orange fresh and use a knife to scrape out as much of the pulp as I can. If the orange seems small and not very juicy, then use two oranges.

3 Now add the honey and turmeric powder. Taste and add more honey or lime according to taste. Place the cranberries at the bottom of the jug or pot or even into the pan. Serve, and enjoy!
